Making room for a growing family

People’s relationships with art morph throughout their lives. Balancing the time one spends on their art with relationships and family responsibilities can change the way one approaches their process.

In this excerpt, TW Creative Director John Vogel asks Alan King how his relationships have affected his writing, and Alan details the way that his process changed to make room for his wife and then again when they had children.

Alan was got his start in poetry coming up through the open mic scene in the DC area and earned his MFA from Stonecoast, a University of Southern Maine low-residency creative writing program, while his wife was went back to school for her MSW. Under mentorship from future US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, who was then a visiting faculty member at Stonecoast, he put together his second book of poetry, Point Blank (Silver Birch Press, 2016).
